Description

Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a hearty comfort food classic made with juicy seasoned hamburger steaks baked in a rich, creamy onion gravy. Simple ingredients and old-fashioned flavor make this a perfect family dinner.

Ingredients

  • Hamburger Steaks
  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • Creamy Gravy
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, gently mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper.
  3. Form mixture into 6–8 oval-shaped patties and set aside.
  4. Brown patties in an oven-safe skillet for 3–4 minutes per side until golden. Remove and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until softened.
  6. Sprinkle in flour and stir for about 2 minutes to create a roux.
  7. Slowly whisk in beef broth and heavy cream until the gravy becomes smooth and thick.
  8. Stir in garlic powder.
  9. Nestle the browned hamburger steaks back into the gravy.
  10. Cover tightly and bake for 45 minutes.
  11. Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes until bubbly.
  12. Remove from oven and let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Serve with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or rice to soak up the gravy.
  • Use a Dutch oven or transfer everything to a 9×13 baking dish if your skillet isn’t oven-safe.
  • For extra flavor, add sliced mushrooms to the gravy.
