Description

French Onion Beef Stew is a comforting and hearty meal that features caramelized onions, tender beef, and Gruyère cheese, perfect for chilly nights.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs beef chuck, cut into chunks
  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup dry red wine
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon thyme
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Baguette or crusty bread, for topping
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 30–40 minutes.
  2. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 additional minute.
  3. In another pot, brown the beef chunks over medium-high heat, then transfer to the onion mixture.
  4. Pour in beef broth, red wine, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Simmer covered for 1.5–2 hours until beef is tender.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Serve stew in bowls topped with slices of baguette and Gruyère cheese. Bake for 15–20 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.

Notes

  • Caramelize onions well for deep flavor; don’t rush.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge up to 3 days or frozen up to 3 months. Reheat on stovetop or microwave with a little water if needed.
