Ingredients
- 1 pound breakfast sausage (mild, maple, or spicy)
- 1 (20 oz) package frozen shredded hash browns, thawed
- ½ cup finely chopped onion
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- Vegetable oil, for frying (about 2-3 cups)
- Optional: Sour cream or favorite dipping sauce
- Optional: Chopped green onions for garnish
Instructions
- Cook sausage in a large skillet over medium heat until no longer pink (7-10 minutes). Drain excess grease.
- Add onion and cook 3-5 minutes until softened.
- Combine sausage, onion, hash browns, cheese, flour, eggs, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a large bowl.
- Form mixture into small balls or patties and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Optional: Chill for 30 minutes to firm up.
- Heat 2-3 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep skillet or Dutch oven.
- Fry appetizers in batches 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
- Serve warm with dipping sauces and garnish with green onions if desired.

- Try different cheeses like pepper jack or mozzarella.
- Add cayenne pepper or hot sauce for spice.
- Add diced vegetables (bell peppers, mushrooms, spinach) pre-cooked.
