Description

This Chinese Beef and Broccoli is a quick one-pan takeout-style dish featuring tender beef, crisp broccoli, and a rich savory garlic soy sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb flank steak (or skirt steak), thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda (optional, for tenderizing)
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or water
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. If using a tougher cut, marinate beef with baking soda for at least 30 minutes, then rinse and pat dry.
  2. Mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, cornstarch, beef broth, sugar, and black pepper in a bowl to create the sauce.
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a pan over high heat and sear beef quickly until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. Add remaining oil, then sauté garlic and ginger for 30 seconds.
  5. Add broccoli and a splash of water, cover and steam for 2–3 minutes until tender-crisp.
  6. Return beef to the pan and pour in sauce mixture.
  7. Stir everything together and cook until sauce thickens and coats evenly.
  8. Serve hot with rice or noodles.

Notes

  • Slice beef very thinly against the grain for best tenderness.
  • Don’t overcook broccoli—it should stay slightly crisp.
  • Add carrots, bell peppers, or snap peas for variation.
